Calling All Writers...

I'm curious about something. Do you share your short stories or novel excerpts online for the whole world to read?

I've considered it in the past, but then felt paranoid about someone using my main character's name or even stealing my work in some way. Seems too risky.

What is your opinion on writers sharing their work on blogs or websites? Is it better to wait until a writer is published?

Just wondering...

This week I'm finishing up my query letter and synopsis while working on my final (I hope!) edits which I should be done with before December. I guess this is when it's good to be a perfectionist.

What's going on in your writing or regular life? Do you share your writing on the Internet? Why or why not?

Hi,

Yes, I share snippets, excerpts and flash-fiction. I used to b paranoid, too, about theft. But if it happens and publishing dates are "proof" on Blogger, plus all work is copyright the author, a plagiarist better watch out 'cos I'll be after their blood! No, seriously, I'll let my lawyer handle any plagiarism, though in some respects it is a form of flattery if someone feels need to steal characters and plot!! ;)

I seriously can't see that putting a small excerpt of your story, a flash story, a couple of lines of something you've written can harm but I guess I would say the best thing to do is to share these in context of say a blogfest or a writerly forum.

Personally I keep my current wip very close to my heart and have only shared chapters privately with CPs.

For my full fledged short stories I only advertise or provide a link to where the story is featured if they are featured, otherwise I don't put any of it anywhere as I might wish to re-submit elsewhere and most comps etc state that stories submitted must not have been published on one's blog.

But all my bad poetry I splurged all over my blog! LOL! Take care

I don't share my stuff online, but I don't think anyone would steal it from you. Even if a writer took the idea, he'd write a totally different story anyway.

I started my blog "Flash Fiction", with the express notion of sharing short stories, poetry, and flash fiction on line. Yes, I may be "giving it away", but that was my original intent; to entertain the masses, for free. Sometimes, while I'm writing a flash, I decide that an alternate, expanded version would work as a short story and so I write and submit that separately. I also write short stories for publication which I don't share. To my knowledge, no one has ever stolen anything from my blog, and if they did, I would pursue them. And it nice to get feedback and, on occasion, private critique.

I've linked one of my short stories to my blog, and I've posted a snippet here and there of my books, but I don't go bonkers. I feel it gives your blog readers a "taste" of what your writing is like. :)

As long as it's short, I don't see anything wrong with it. I agree with the others, if someone were to try it, you have "proof" that it's yours.

I don't think anything is wrong with it. I myself never share wips online, but I may in the future--when I do, the excerpts will be short and sweet teasers. I've only shared poems and flash pieces so far.

I used to be afraid to share, but then I realized that having it on my blog and dated would show that it is mine. If someone needs to steal the name of a character, I cannot stop them, but so far all of the people I have met through blogging are good people and I just don't see anything like that happening.

In my writing world... I am almost to my 50k for NaNo, I started working with a new crate partner a week ago and I have been doing plot consultations with Martha Alderson (SHE IS FABULOUS). What I am not doing? SLeeping or blogging, but I will catch up soon.

Congratulations on all that you have accomplished.

I have shared my short stories and the first chapters of my completed mss. I figure, I need something out there for people to get an idea of my writing style.
